Galerie Martin Janda is showing Mangelos in the UTOPIA:POST WAR section at Spark Art Fair Vienna 2021 together with Julije Knifer and Ivan Kožarić, two other members of the Gorgona group, in a joint presentation with Galerie Gregor Podnar Berlin.
Under the pseudonym Mangelos, Dimitrije Bašičević was one of the most important artists from former Yugoslavia whose work strongly influenced subsequent generations. Parallel to his career as an art historian, critic and curator at the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Zagreb he created a unique oeuvre
“It is a visually very coherent work, unique in its open-dialogue form, intellectual independence and stimulating scepticism. In the formation of his own particular language and rules, paying no heed to conventions, Mangelos created a completely authentic work that he himself characterised as no-art.” (Branka Stipančić)

Galerie Martin Janda was founded in 1992 by Martin Janda as an alternative exhibition space. Over the following years the field of activities expanded to become a gallery. In 1999 the gallery moved to its present location in the centre of Vienna. Together with four other renowned galleries, a new centre for contemporary art and discussion was formed at close quarters to Vienna Secession, Academy of Fine Arts, Kunsthistorisches Museum and Museumsquartier.
The gallery programme concentrates on international contemporary art – conceptual art, painting, drawing, film/video, photography, sculpture as well as installation – and focuses on artistic positions that combine different experiences.
