andriesse eyck galerie (Amsterdam, Netherlands) presents the work of Charlotte Dumas. Dumas‘ Yonaguni horses, with their small stature, are majestic and at the same time vulnerable. They have something mythic about them. Charlotte Dumas is known for the intimacy of her photographic portraits of horses, dogs, wolves and tigers. The portrait must transcend itself. “I want the viewer to imagine themselves alone with the image, so that a relationship can arise with the animal in the photo.” Previous subjects have been rescue dogs searching for survivors in the collapsed buildings after 9/11, police horses and the caisson horses of the military cemetery in Arlington (USA). Dumas searches for places where the contact between humans and animals continues and examines how the mutual relationship is subject to change. Its ambivalence interests her. Dumas photographs animals after they have rendered their services, stripped of the function and symbolism that we humans attribute to animals. Charlotte Dumas tries to penetrate to the core and individuality of the animals in her photographs and films. She captures the essence and autonomy of humans and animals in her work.
