Das Urverlangen nach Auf- sowie Erklärung ist dem Menschen inhärent und dient der Erforschung aller Fragen des Seins. Die Erkenntnis, dass die betrachtete Kunst nicht ausschließlich Repräsentation ist, sondern vor allem Produktion, ist dabei essenziell. Dies bedeutet gleichfalls ein Verwerfen der Idee des individuellen Handelns bei der uns innewohnenden Suche nach Antworten. Daraus ergibt sich jenes Dilemma: Bei der Beschäftigung mit Kunst führt weder vollkommene Unvoreingenommenheit noch das Zusammentragen von verfügbaren Wissen zu echtem, intrinsischen Erkenntnisgewinn. Karl Karners Werkserie der Überraschungseier setzt sich mit diesem Diskurs auseinander und analysiert eine alternative Konzeption der Betrachterrolle. Karners Überraschungseier präsentieren sich zunächst als in Größe variierende, zylindrische Formen, die mit Ausbrüchen einen Blick auf ein glänzendes Material im Kern freilegen, das – nicht zuletzt aufgrund des Titels – Neugierde und ein Bedürfnis nach Erklärung erweckt. Während die für den Künstler markanten, individualisierten Skulpturen in Farbe, Form und Größe variieren, endet bei Karners Überraschungseiern der skulpturale Schaffensprozess vor dem Herausschlagen aus der umschließenden Form. Denn der weitere Zustand der Skulpturen wird von der Künstlerhand in die der Akteure gelegt. Doch es liegen keine Instruktionen bei, wie mit dem Werk fortzufahren ist. Vielmehr reversiert Karner die Rolle und begibt sich in eine observierende, abwartende Position, die eine Reaktion von seinem Gegenüber erwartet, während das individuelle Handeln des Betrachters unabdingbar wird. Endlich ist es das Aufbrechen allein oder gemeinsam, welches das instinktive Verhalten der Menschen hervorzubringen vermag und ein intuitiveres Denken fördert.

Karl Karner (b.1973 in Feldbach, Austria) lives and works in Vienna and Feldbach, Austria. Karner obtained his MA at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna under Professor Heimo Zobernig. Karner positions his work between the disciplines of visual arts, performance and dance theatre. Within his practice, Karner continuously discusses bodily perception and the concept of corporeality itself. These are not only related to the human body, but can yet be understood as a wide discussion of object, materiality and space. In the artist´s installations and art environments, viewers frequently become players. Such participative impulses accentuate the irony inherent in these artworks. The repetition of recurring motifs references the serial production of industrial objects. In Karner‘s work, these motifs are hand-made pieces of cast iron that become part of the artistic process. His preferred motifs are beaked creatures and dogs or hares, often clad with bronze or gold. It would almost seem that these inanimate fantastic creatures are brought to life by the protagonists. With their interactive potential, the environments created by Karner generate various forms of display that are composed similar to arrangements of theatre props and are complemented by a series of performative gestures. Karl Karner‘s multisensorial, fictional fairytale worlds tell a story of incessantly repeated settings of everyday life, albeit with their function deconstructed, which clearly point out the absurdity of certain processes and elements. One of Karner’s more recent exploration in his practice includes the production of tights on which he prints his drawings.

Galerie Kandlhofer was founded in 2016 and represents both emerging Austrian and international artists. The gallery is located in the centre of Vienna and has become a vibrant meeting place for artists, curators and collectors. Within the program, Galerie Kandlhofer presents artists of varying mediums from painting to performance with a particular interest in artists whose practices engage in interdisciplinary art. Furthermore, Galerie Kandlhofer actively curates the gallery program with an ethos of engaging with diverse voices and perspectives.
