Julia Brennacher does not shy away from repeatedly questioning topoi of painting, as they have been pushed forward especially since modernist abstraction, and the associated complex legacy of this medium, and making proposals for its updating. The artist is less concerned here with an expansion of painting through the addition of other materials or a display – on the contrary, she uses on the contrary, she consciously uses almost classical materials such as canvas, stretcher frame, and paint – but rather a reduced, persistent questioning of the medium itself. Structural logics and categories are not only implicit in Julia Brennacher’s painting, but are reinterpreted in her painterly experimental arrangements. Color and contour, transparency and opacity, illusionism and objecthood, chroma and contrast, chance and composition, figure and ground – these paradigmatic pairs of concepts that mark the basic conditions of painting are also at issue in Julia Brennacher’s works. from text by Georgia Holz „Julia Brennacher. Painting that looks beyond the edge of the picture“

Drawing on her experience in the art world, the gallerist’s choice of young generation and mid-career artists now reflects an understanding of sophisticated artistic positions inspired by current discourse with an eye for their artistic qualities and skills. Maintaining a focus on female painters from Austria, the gallery is open to experiments in other media, featuring sculpture, print making and photography in a comparable contemplative aesthetics. Implementing a sustainable structure as well as comprehensive support for artists, collectors, and art professionals, Galerie Sophia Vonier addresses a heterogeneous audience of international art enthusiasts, also reaching out to young collectors.
