Irina Lotarevich’s sculptural practice is shaped by the intersection of her own subjective experience with larger systems. Materially, she works with wood, metal, and casting techniques, frequently combining both high and low or de-valued materials with sophisticated fabrication techniques and a sensitivity to building spatial narratives. Lotarevich also interweaves her own writing and use of language into her work. The minimal yet complex and specific forms of her sculptures reference architecture, bureaucracy, labor, and parts of her body.
Irina Lotarevich (*1991 in Rybinsk, Russia, lives and works in New York City and Vienna) studied at Cornell University, Hunter College, and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Recent solo and duo exhibitions include ‚Refinery‘ at SOPHIE TAPPEINER, Vienna (2020); ‚Galvanic Couple‘ at FUTURA Centre for Contemporary Art, Prague (2019); ‚Pensive State‘, a two-person show with Anna Schachinger, at SOPHIE TAPPEINER, Vienna (2019); ‚Schemas‘ at Kevin Space, Vienna (2017) and ‚Irina Lotarevich‘ at Kodomo, Far Rockaway (2016). Her works have recently been included in the MAK Biennial for Change at Museum for Applied Arts, Vienna (2021) and group exhibitions at Lovaas Projects, Munich (2021), Loggia, Vienna (2019), Am Ende des Tages, Düsseldorf (2019), and Tarsia, Naples (2019), among others. Her work will be shown in the upcoming MAK Biennale in Vienna in 2021.
