presentation by Galerie3 at the SPARK Art Fair 2022 gives an overview on Margot Pilz oeuvre, including experimental computer works from the 80’s that have not been exhibited before. Also premiering is Margot Pilz´ latest video work, where she performs in a golden diaper, humorously breaking taboos around aging.
Margot Pilz, born in the Netherlands, moved to Indonesia as a small child with her parents to start a new life in the colonies, but ended up surviving for several years in labor camps, setup by the Japanese during World War II. The family returned to Holland. At an adult age Margot Pilz moved to Vienna to become a photographer. As a young woman and mother, she built her independent career by photographing the art and culture scene and was politicized through feminist alliances and movements. Since the 70’s, she has created a comprehensive body of work of photographic series and much noticed political interventions in public spaces. During the 80’s and 90’s she turned toward media art and experimented with video and early home computers. In her later work, since the 2000s, Margot Pilz artistically targets aging and her ongoing concerns of sexuality, gender equality and environmentalism. Margot Pilz (85) rich artistic work has only been recognized at full scale in recent years. Since her first big museum show in 2015, her work has been shown in some of the most important art institutions all over Europe as well as in Austria. In 2021 her Art Biography, appeared, her comprehensive show “Sassy Sequences” was presented by Galerie3 and her solo show ‘Selbstauslöserin’ at Kunsthalle Krems is still on until April 3rd.
Galerie3 is one of the most vibrant places for contemporary art in southern Austria and beyond and has more than 25 years of experience in curating exhibitions with its main venue located in the historic city center of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. In recent years gallerist Lena Freimüller has broadened the program including Galerie3 Velden as a second venue. Furthermore, the mobile project Galerie3 flux is active in Vienna, public spaces, produces a podcast and develops innovative projects with varying partners.
